Smith '65 "WOW Quilt"
Updated July 13, 2010

For our 35th Reunion Carolyn Smith Bonner designed and assembled a special "WOW Quilt" in honor of the reunion's W.O.W. theme. Carolyn mailed fabrics and drawings to classmates who created and sewed individual squares. After the pieces were returned to her, she assembled the quilt, but as our reunion approached and she became more ill, she asked for the assistance of Suzanne Holden Gordon to complete it. Sadly, Carolyn died a week before our 35th reunion, but she left our class a beautiful legacy. Mary Pennell Nelson, the first lucky winner, suggested that the quilt be raffled every five years at each reunion with the proceeds going to a scholarship fund in Carolyn's name. We enthusiastically agreed. The winner at our very last reunion will keep the quilt and bequeath it to the Alumnae Association.

We raised $1440 for the Fund and the lucky winner of the quilt was Lynne Vietor Parsons. She'll keep it until our 50th when it'll be raffled again.

See below for information on the fund.

Note about the Carolyn Bonner Smith Fund

This is an "unrestricted current use fund.' Therefore, whatever we raise at our 5-year reunions will go directly to a student each year that that the fund has money. So far, two students have received aid - one in 2001, another in 2006. A third will receive aid in 2011 from funds raised at our current quilt raffle. This is a great way to give assistance to current students with financial need.
